yay's and nay's

It has been awhile... I always want to write something profound or insightful but it never seems to happen.
What has been happening in point form?
*Great Spring break!
*Went to UBC (was a gorgeous, sunny day)
*Went to Kelowna - spent too much there
*Tax Canada has given me more refund than my tax return said - who is right and who is wrong? I sure hope they are right.
*Spring time is arriving
*Going to judge a science fair tomorrow - at 8 a.m. (those who know me, I am not a morning person)
*Computer UBC registration still SUCKS! Had to talk to a real person to get it all sorted out.
*Life is good.

unloading the dishwasher

Why do men avoid unloading the dishwasher? My husband will open it up, see clean dishes, and slink away if I am not around. I am stumped.

The Real Vancouver Rain

Hi! I have read every one's blogs and when I am gone for 6 days, a lot happens. I am glad I caught up with you all.

I just came back from Vancouver and yes, it really rained there a lot. The real Vancouver Rain. But I had fun anyway.

I have had the unofficial email that yes, I am accepted into the M. Ed for deaf/hh program. Yay! I went there last week to also visit the campus. It was a beautiful sunny day and the atmosphere is so ... UBCish. I love it. I can't wait to start in July (but I will miss my hubby).

Vancouver was great as I saw my friend, met with some aunts and uncles, and hung out with the best almost 5 year old that I have met. I went shopping on Granville and visited the Vancouver Aquarium. For those of you who saw the Stanley Park tree devastation on t.v., that does not show what it is like. Drive around. It is sad in many ways but it is Nature.

While my car was parked at my friend's house, their neighbour from across the street backed into it. Thank goodness for honest people. Let's just hope ICBC will pay for it as my car is over 10 years old.

Anyway, great trip, great visit, great to be home... till Thursday and then I am off again.

Vancouver Rain

Sunday morning, and it is raining like it does in Vancouver. We have to turn on the lights because it is very somber out there. I want to curl in front of the fire and read a thick, mind-absorbing book. But I don't have one.
So, I will go to option 2. The housework will get done and I will eat chocolate.

In two days, I may be experiencing real Vancouver rain but I hope I get the 'springtime in Vancouver' weather.

Happy spring break to those who have it and to those that don't, happy March.

Newborn Hearning Screenings

Last week, I was invited to Interior Health's information meeting on newborn hearing screenings.

My numbers may be off as I am going from memory but my notes are at the office if someone wants more information.

1. In BC, in any given year, 10% of the population has some form of hearing loss. In BC, 120 - 160 new born babies will be born with a hearing loss. Degree of loss is varied.

2. While educators of D/HH (deaf and hard of hearing) know that giving a child langague before the age of 5 is the best way for success, research has found that the frist 6 months of a baby's life is more important for language accquistion than previously thought. Therefore, the ministry of health has set up the newborn hearing screenings so that every child that is born should have it done either before they leave the hospital (if it is offered there), or by an appointment with the health authority before not too long after leaving the hosptial (those of you who have home births, you would check with either your midwife/doola/doctor ect). This way, any hearing loss is detected and intervention can begin - whether it is sign, hearing aids, cochlear implant or a combination. This way, the child will have the best chance at having langauge at the same level as thier hearing peers.
3. This procedure is totally NON invasive. The mother and baby goes to the technician, the baby should be sleeping and electrodes are placed on parts (head and shoulder) of the baby to read the brain stem waves. Sound is passed through the ears (there is a 'cup' that goes over the baby's ears) and a reading (accuarate) is taken. This takes place in a very quite room, with a comfy chair for the mom to hold her baby as this takes place. If memory serves me correct, this should take no more than 1/2 hour. Once done, the results are read (I am not sure if at the same time or a return appointment) and if there is a hearing loss (remember only 10% of population) then intervention is discussed and it goes on from there.
4. If the baby has a hearing loss that requires a hearing aid, the ear molds have to me made every 6 - 8 weeks (the ears grow). This and the hearing aids are provided free up to the age of 5 (my soap box is why can't gov't pay for school aged kids too?). Hearing aid molds are not painful to get - goo gets put in the ears, it feels cold, and then it is taken out and sent away to be made into a mold.

That is it. A very important screening to be done for sure.

Catch Up

No great insights on this post - just a catch up on life.

I had a few days all with just myself and my cat. Dan was away in Edmonton. Of course, it had to snow a lot one day and that meant I had to do everything (so the garbage didn't get taken out). I hate shovelling snow with a passion. Nothing worse than going smoothly and then the shovel ends up in your gut as you hit an uneven part of the pavement. Anyway, having a few days by myself was nice but it was even nicer when Dan came home.

Work: It is going great. I love the job and can't wait till I get my Masters so that I will really know what I am doing. I think I have mentioned that many times before. I am looking forward to being in Vancouver for July. I love the coast to visit but not to live so this is a perfect opportunity. I am researching UBC and I have a map and everything. I might even bring my bike and get around by bike there.

Spring Break... wow, it is almost here and this district gets two weeks. I like that. So, I will be the traveller and go to Vancouver, come back to Trail and see Bruce Cochran and Red Rider (yep, here in Trail) and then Dan and I will go to Kelowna.

The 'flying without the net' situation... it is going great in that I love learning about my body but it sure takes out the spontaneity as right now as we are still in the beginning stages. Whenever it is safe, someone had been sick or away!!

And as my friend Cheryl is doing, she lists 3 good things she is happy for so I will take a page out of her book and do the same.

1. I heard birds yesterday - spring is near!
2. 2 week spring break is great for getting to visit everyone
3. Twice my husband had the flu this year(that is not the great part) but both times I did not catch it at all.

Update completed.
